Looking for individual or group clinical supervision? Unsure about your ACA or PACFA supervision requirements?

Whether you are a student counsellor, registered counsellor, psychotherapist or experienced mental health professional, these frequently asked questions will help you understand your supervision options, professional obligations and opportunities for growth.

At Phuong Tran Psychotherapy & Counselling, we provide supportive, reflective and culturally responsive clinical supervision to strengthen your professional confidence, clinical competence and ethical practice.

A. Understanding Individual & Group Clinical Supervision

1. What is clinical supervision?

Clinical supervision is a structured, collaborative professional process that supports counsellors, psychotherapists and mental health practitioners in developing their clinical skills, reflecting on client work, managing ethical challenges and maintaining professional wellbeing.

It encourages safe, ethical and effective practice while supporting ongoing professional growth.

2. What is the difference between individual and group clinical supervision?

Individual Supervision provides personalised, one-to-one support tailored to your clinical cases, professional challenges and learning goals.

Group Supervision brings practitioners together to share experiences, explore different perspectives and learn through guided professional discussion.

Both offer valuable opportunities for reflection and professional development.

3. Which type of clinical supervision is right for me?

Individual supervision may be more suitable if you prefer focused, private discussions or need support with complex clinical and ethical matters.

Group supervision may be more suitable if you enjoy collaborative learning, want to hear diverse perspectives and value professional connection.

Many practitioners benefit from combining both formats.

4. Who can attend clinical supervision?

Clinical supervision may be suitable for student counsellors, qualified counsellors, psychotherapists, school counsellors, mental health practitioners and other helping professionals.

Supervision arrangements should be appropriate to your professional role, qualifications, scope of practice and any applicable registration requirements.

5. What can I discuss during supervision?

You can explore:

  • Complex cases, clinical formulation and therapeutic interventions.

  • Ethical dilemmas, confidentiality and professional boundaries.

  • Trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice.

  • Therapeutic relationships and countertransference.

  • Clinical decision-making, confidence and professional identity.

  • Burnout prevention, self-care and practitioner wellbeing.

You do not need to be experiencing a problem to benefit from supervision.

6. Can student counsellors attend individual or group supervision?

Yes. Supervision can help students develop practical skills, reflective awareness, ethical understanding and confidence.

Students should confirm that the supervisor, session format and supervision hours meet their university, training provider or placement requirements.

7. How often should I attend clinical supervision?

The appropriate frequency depends on your experience, client workload, complexity of practice and professional registration requirements.

Supervision should be regular and responsive to your clinical needs, rather than simply an activity to complete before membership renewal.

B. ACA Membership & Clinical Supervision Requirements

8. How many supervision hours do ACA members need each year?

Practising Australian Counselling Association (ACA) members generally need a minimum of 10 hours of professional supervision per membership year.

ACA also uses a supervision-to-client-contact ratio of approximately one hour of supervision for every 20 client contact hours. Your actual needs may exceed the annual minimum.

9. Do ACA Provisional and Levels 1–4 members have different supervision requirements?

ACA’s supervision policies set out obligations according to membership and practising status.

The 10-hour annual minimum is a common requirement for practising full members across Levels 1–4. Provisional members should confirm the conditions specific to their registration.

Your supervision needs may also depend on your clinical workload, professional experience and workplace requirements.

10. Does ACA recognise group clinical supervision?

Yes. ACA recognises eligible group supervision conducted under appropriate professional supervision arrangements.

ACA’s published Chapter Group Supervision Framework describes a maximum of five group supervision hours towards a 10-hour annual requirement. Because ACA supervision documents may address different contexts, members should confirm the rules that apply to their membership and supervision setting rather than assuming one limit applies to every group.

11. What is the maximum group size for ACA supervision?

ACA’s published Chapter Group Supervision Framework specifies a maximum ratio of one supervisor to 10 supervisees.

Additional requirements may apply depending on the supervision setting and current policy.

12. Does my clinical supervisor need to be ACA registered?

Your supervisor must meet ACA’s applicable recognition and eligibility criteria.

Phuong Tran is listed as an ACA Level 4 Registered Counsellor and ACA Registered Supervisor. Before booking for membership compliance purposes, confirm that the supervision arrangement meets your particular ACA requirements.

13. Can ACA members complete clinical supervision online?

Yes. Online professional supervision may be suitable under ACA’s supervision framework when the supervisor, technology, professional boundaries and session arrangements meet applicable standards.

Individual and group supervision options are available online with Phuong Tran.

C. PACFA Membership & Clinical Supervision Requirements

14. How many supervision hours do PACFA members need each year?

Under PACFA’s published 2026 renewal guidance, eligible practising registrants generally require:

Annual client contact hours

Minimum supervision

Fewer than 400

10 hours

400 or more

15 hours

PACFA Certified Supervisors

15 hours

These are annual renewal requirements. Different criteria may apply to student registration, registration upgrades or specific professional categories.

15. Can PACFA members attend group clinical supervision?

Yes. PACFA recognises eligible individual and small-group clinical supervision.

Group supervision provides opportunities to learn from different clinical experiences while developing reflective practice, ethical awareness and professional competence.

16. How many participants are allowed in PACFA group supervision?

PACFA’s standard small-group supervision format involves two to six supervisees with an appropriately qualified supervisor.

Groups exceeding six participants should not be assumed to qualify for standard PACFA registration supervision requirements.

17. Can PACFA members complete clinical supervision online?

Yes. Eligible online clinical supervision can be recognised when it meets PACFA’s current supervision requirements.

Both individual and qualifying small-group sessions may be suitable, depending on registration status and the relevant professional standards.

18. Does my supervisor have to be PACFA registered?

Not necessarily. PACFA’s supervisor eligibility criteria can recognise appropriately qualified and experienced supervisors from relevant professional backgrounds.

The supervisor must satisfy PACFA’s applicable clinical experience, professional standing and supervision competency requirements. Practitioners should confirm eligibility before relying on sessions for registration purposes.

19. How many supervision hours are needed to upgrade to PACFA Registered Clinical status?

PACFA’s 2026 Registered Clinical upgrade requirements include:

  • At least two years since graduation.

  • At least 750 eligible post-qualification client contact hours.

  • At least 75 hours of post-qualification supervision.

  • At least 50% of the minimum required supervision hours completed individually.

Applicants must also meet PACFA’s applicable education, eligibility and documentation standards.

Importantly, the 75-hour upgrade requirement is different from annual renewal supervision requirements.

20. Can PACFA members use peer supervision?

Peer supervision may be recognised for eligible, experienced practitioners under specific PACFA conditions.

Peer supervision is not automatically equivalent to facilitated group supervision. Eligibility and claimable hours should be confirmed against your registration category and PACFA’s current standards.

21. What if I join PACFA partway through the membership year?

Eligible practitioners joining partway through the year may receive pro-rata adjustments to their annual supervision and continuing professional development requirements.

Your exact obligations depend on your registration date and category.

PACFA references: PACFA — Registration Renewal and PACFA — Registered Clinical Upgrade Requirements.

4. Supervision Records, Professional Standards & Booking

22. Can the same supervision hours count towards both ACA and PACFA membership?

Potentially, yes. A supervision session may satisfy both associations’ requirements if the supervisor, session format, duration and documentation independently meet each organisation’s standards.

Membership with both associations does not automatically guarantee that every session will be accepted by both.

23. How should I record my clinical supervision hours?

Maintain accurate records including:

  • Supervision date and duration.

  • Supervisor’s name and professional credentials.

  • Individual or group format and group size.

  • Supervisor’s verification or signature, where required.

PACFA also requires appropriate evidence of supervision and client contact hours for relevant registration processes.

24. Can Phuong Tran sign my supervision log or verification form?

Supervision attendance and completed hours can be documented according to the agreed supervision arrangement.

Before booking, please confirm whether you require an ACA or PACFA log, university placement verification or specific professional documentation, so eligibility and signing requirements can be discussed.

25. Are clinical supervision sessions confidential?

Clinical supervision operates within professional confidentiality agreements and relevant legal, ethical and safety obligations.

In individual supervision, clinical discussions occur directly between you and your supervisor.

In group supervision, all participants are expected to maintain confidentiality and protect client privacy.

Client information should be appropriately de-identified, and confidentiality cannot be guaranteed absolutely.

26. Is clinical supervision the same as personal therapy?

No. Clinical supervision focuses on professional practice, client care, ethical decision-making and professional development.

Although personal responses and emotions may be explored when relevant to clinical work, supervision does not replace personal counselling or psychotherapy.

27. What should I prepare for my first supervision session?

You may wish to bring your professional development goals, questions about clinical practice, de-identified case material and any relevant supervision requirements.

If you are seeking hours towards ACA or PACFA registration, please identify your membership category and any required documentation in advance.

28. Can I attend both individual and group clinical supervision?

Yes. Combining individual and group supervision can provide a valuable balance of personalised guidance, shared professional learning and diverse clinical perspectives.

Your combination of sessions should reflect your professional goals and any membership-specific requirements.
